BABY CAPSULES CAN MAKE TRAVEL WITH YOUR BABY A BREEZE

Picture this: you’ve arrived at your destination and your sleeping newborn is getting some much-needed rest in their baby capsule. You don’t want to wake them, right? But you can’t stay in the car forever. The good news about baby capsules is that, unlike car seats, you can take your baby out of the car with minimal disturbance.

What capsule models are available and what’s the difference?

Baby capsules come in a variety of models. Many capsule models will fit a child from newborn to 6 months. However, there are a number of newer models designed to last your baby for up to 12 months (approx 13kgs) due to a variety of inserts and adjustable height points.

      Our top picks

Metro Baby only stocks Australia’s best-selling, highest quality brands. Baby capsule models by brands like Cybex, Bugaboo and Maxi Cosi are constantly improving and refining their designs based on user feedback and the latest design technology. You can’t go wrong with a choice from our range.

      Benefits of a portable capsule

A sleeping baby is a beautiful thing. By far, the greatest benefit of a baby capsule is the ability to minimise disturbance for your little one. A baby capsule will act as a carry cot that you can take out of your house and into your car without disturbing your baby. And, if you opt to buy adapters for your pram or stroller, you can click the capsule straight into it. But the features don’t end there. Some models are designed to be used as a rocker or a stationery seat/feeder as well.

If you will be transporting your newborn in more than one car, you can install an additional capsule base so you can click baby in and out with ease.

Making sure your new capsule is safe

When it comes to buying a baby capsule that is safe, the key points you’ll need to consider are:

      • Compliance - It’s crucial that your baby capsule meets Australian standards. At Metro Baby, we only stock Australia’s leading baby car seats certified to standard AS/NZS 1754. And, all our seats are backed by manufacturer warranty.

      • Installation: Your seat must be installed correctly according to manufacturer’s installation instructions. If in any doubt, have a professional install it.

      • Harness: Adhere to the harness requirements for your capsule every time you use. It’s a must for keeping baby safe.

Weight and height requirements for your baby

Each baby capsule and car seat come with their own specific recommendations for height, weight or age. Many capsule models have been designed to take babies from a premmie size through to 12 months. It’s important to regularly check height and insert adjustments as your baby grows.

Fitting your capsule into your pram

Our range of baby capsules can be purchased with pram adapters to create a travel system. When choosing a capsule, you’ll need to ensure you check it’s compatibility with your pram. For example, the range of UPPAbaby and Baby Jogger City prams coordinate with various capsule models in the Maxi Cosi range.

Baby capsules vs convertible car seats

      • Baby capsule: A baby capsule is a car seat that can be used as a travel system (with the correct adaptors for your pram). So, if baby is asleep (or falling asleep), they are more likely to stay asleep. Baby capsules are always rearward facing.

      • Convertible car seat: A convertible car seat differs from a baby capsule because it is not part of a travel system. The “convertible” part means that the seat can be placed rear facing and then switched to forward facing when you and your baby are ready. Convertible car seats are from birth to 4 years of age. All-in-one convertible car seats are from birth to 8 years, and toddler seats can be either a convertible car seat or a forward facing car seat for 6 months to 8 years old. There are also booster seat models for 4 to 8 or even 10 year olds. Unlike baby capsules, these seats remain fixed in the car.

      • Booster seats: A booster seat differs to car seats and capsules because they are for children aged 4 years and up.

Factors to consider when buying a capsule

Car size: Is your car big or small? Do you also need to accommodate other car seats/children?

Anchorage points: You will need to know if your car already has an ISOFIX anchor point or whether you will be using the existing seatbelt accompanied by a tether strap connected to an anchor point for a non-ISOFIX setup.

Compatibility: In order to use your baby capsule as a travel system, you need to make sure it is compatible with your pram or stroller.

Cleaning: Babies can make a lot of mess. Consider covers that can be easily removed and placed in the washing machine. You can also protect the seats of your car with seat protectors from our car accessories range.

Weight: Will your capsule be too heavy for you to lift? Most capsules weigh around 5kg without a child in them.

How to fit a baby capsule securely

Installation: Child car seats must be properly fitted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The seat should be held tightly by the seatbelt or ISOFIX connectors to minimise movement, and the tether strap must be connected to the anchor point and not a luggage point. Some of our models, like the Cybex Cloud Q Capsule and the Maxi Cosi Mico 12 LX baby capsule, have informative installation videos on our site.

If in doubt, it’s recommended that child car seats are fitted by an authorised restraint fitter.

Securing baby in capsule: When strapping your little one into a capsule, the harness needs to be on or just above the baby’s shoulders and firm across their body. Ensure the straps are never twisted, tangled, too tight or too loose.

      FAQ:

How long do you use a baby capsule for?

A baby capsule can be used for up to six months or 12 months of age, depending on the model. If you are looking for a seat that will last as long as 4 or even 8 years, check out the convertible car seats range.

What age should a baby come out of a capsule?

Depending on the model, baby capsules last from birth up to 6 or 12 months, however, you should refer to the height and weight guides on your seat. When your baby is ready to come out of a capsule, a toddler seat is the next step.
