Manual vs electric breast pump - which is right for you
Medela make manual breast pumps and electric breast pumps. Both types have their benefits. A manual breast pump works anywhere and is a more affordable option than an electric breast pump. They’re quiet and are great for occasional expressing. An electric breast pump has an in-built motor that does the hard work for you. They’re easier and more convenient to use.
All Medela breast pumps come with 2-Phase Expression Technology which mimics your baby’s natural sucking rhythm. Discover the Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump as a breast pump set complete with Medela Personalfit Flex Breast Shield, silicone teat, storage bags and nursing pads or choose the popular Medela Swing Maxi Flex Double Electric Breast Pump for expressing milk faster so that you can spend more quality time with your baby!
Cleaning your breast pump
It’s super easy to keep your Medela breast pumps clean. The Medela Quick Clean Breast Milk Removal Soap removes stubborn breast milk up to 3 days old and is hypoallergenic. Use it on all breast pump parts, nipples, bras and bottles.
- Start by rinsing all parts in drinking-quality water
- Wash them in water and soap
- Rinse them again for 15-20 seconds
- Dry each part with a clean cloth or leave to air-dry on a clean towel
You can also pop all of the parts into the dishwasher for an even quicker clean!
How long to store breast milk
You can store expressed breast milk in the fridge, the freezer or at room temperature for later feeding. In general, you can store breast milk at room temperature for up to 4 hours, refrigerate it for up to 3 days or freeze it for up to 6 months. If you’ve defrosted frozen breast milk in the fridge, you can store it for up to 2 hours at room temperature or up to 24 hours if kept in the fridge.
Guide to using your Medela breast pump
It takes time and practice to use a breast pump successfully, but it’s well worth the effort! To use an electric breast pump by Medela, follow these steps:
- Find a private and comfortable space
- Wash your hands
- Follow the instructions to assemble your breast pump, including connector, tubing and bottle
- Position the breast shields so that your nipples are centred
- Turn the machine on to start the stimulation phase
- When you see or feel yourself begin to express milk, press the expression phases button. This slower phase automatically kicks in after a minute
- Adjust the speed dial to a level that feels comfortable for you
- When you’re done, remove the tubing from the breast shields
- Cap the bottles and store the milk
- Only turn off the machine off when you’ve stored the milk as the extra time will help to dry excess condensation
Most women should pump breast milk for no longer than 15-20 minutes.
