How to choose the best steriliser for you

Safe in the knowledge that all our bpa-free UV, electric steam and microwave sterilisers deliver highly effective sterilisation levels for your baby bottles, consider the following features when comparing sterilisers to find the best steriliser for you:
• Ease of Use - is it quick, simple and easy to use?
• Size - which models will best suit the amount of bench space you can spare?
• How many bottles it fits - if you are 100% bottle feeding you may need a large capacity.
• Cost - babies require many new purchases, which steriliser best fits with your budget?
• Does it dry and store bottles - are these handy features important to you?

How sterilisers work:

Sterilising method

Some sterilisers use the latest UV technology to achieve 99.9% sterilisation rates against bacteria, viruses, germs, mould, fungi and infectious diseases. UV sterilisation is a proven hospital-grade method so we know it's one of the safest techniques for achieving high levels of disinfection. The highest frequency UVC rays are used for sterilisation, working at a much more intense level than UVA or UVB rays.

Electric steam sterilisers and microwave sterilisers require no chemicals, using high steam temperatures to sterilise items.

Length of cycle

Hungry babies don't wait, so the cycle times may need to be considered if you are going to be fully bottle-feeding or if you have more than one baby to feed.
• Microwave sterilisers take between two and six minutes per cycle, depending on the power of the microwave.
• The Rizees UV Baby Steriliser features four programs, so cycle times vary between the Auto, Sterilisation Only, and Drying Only programs. The Sterilisation Only program takes between 10 and 20 minutes.
• Avent electric steam sterilisers require six minutes of sterilisation time.

Drying feature

Drying is an additional feature not available with all baby sterilisers, but it is a handy option. Drying programs use high heats of 55-60 degrees Celsius to complete the cycle, leaving no mould-inviting moisture behind.

Storage after sterilising

Another optional inclusion to consider is the unit's storage capacity. Obviously a wand steriliser has no storage features but is easy to store in itself. Other sterilisation units may store as many as six bottles at a time.

Bench space is generally the issue with sterilisers that have the capacity to store several bottles, but that is offset by the convenience of sterilising, drying and storing baby bottles quickly and easily all in one place.

Consider:
1. If you are fully bottle feeding your baby a steriliser which dries and stores your bottles is very useful.
2. If you are partly bottle feeding and partly breast feeding your child, you may not have the same reliance on bottles as a purely bottle-fed baby.
3. And if your baby is breast feeding with the occasional expressing of breast milk into bottles, you may not need much storage capacity at all.

Why sterilise baby bottles

Sterilisation is essential in order to protect your baby's developing immune system from life-threatening gastrointestinal illnesses caused by bacteria, germs, viruses and infectious diseases.

Along with your baby's bottles, you should also sterilise teats, teething rings and breast pumps if you are expressing breast milk for bottle feeding.

The best way to sterilise baby bottles

UV light, steam and microwaves are all proven and effective methods of sterilisation. Which is the best depends on your situation. Consider the different methods and features that the Rizees and Avent baby bottle sterilisers offer, and decide which fits best with your time, lifestyle, budget and baby's feeding methods.

What other equipment needs cleaning?

While some sterilisers are designed solely to hold bottles, others enable you to put other items in for sterilisation. Commonly people also sterilise any equipment involved in bottle or breast feeding which can include breast pump parts and teats.

Anything that goes into your baby's mouth - which during some developmental stages is a lot of things - can and should be sterilised regularly. This might include things like Tommee Tippee sipping cups, any bottle or breast feeding equipment, silicone teats and soothers, toys and towels.
