Wall rugs or floor rugs
This is the main decision, and the two are priced very differently.
Wall rugs are miniature versions of the floor designs, made to hang. Lion, Melanie and Smiley are all available this way. They start around $79.95, which makes them the cheapest way into the range, and because there is no frame or glass involved they suit the wall above a cot or change table better than a framed print does.
Floor rugs run from around $149.95 up to $699.95 for the largest Smiley rectangle. Shaped rugs like Shell, Cactus, Candy Heart, Love, Hot Dog, Crocodile, Elephant and Rainbow work as a feature in a smaller room. Rectangular rugs like Leopard, Lemon, Eyes and Solid Stripe are the ones to choose if you want to define a floor area rather than decorate one.
The designs
Miffy and friends. Miffy, Melanie, Snuffy, Lion and Elephant, based on Dick Bruna's characters. These pair with the Mr Maria lamps and the wider Miffy range if you are building a themed room.
Collaborations. The Smiley range was made with Smiley for its 50th anniversary and comes as a floor rug, a wall rug and a large rectangle. The Tiny Dog rug is a limited edition with Tinycottons.
Shapes and patterns. Fruit and food shapes, animals, hearts, rainbows, and the Solid Stripe in natural and lilac for something plainer.
How they are made
Designed in the Netherlands and hand-tufted by artisans in India from 100% New Zealand wool. The range is GoodWeave certified, which means no child labour is used in production and every purchase supports education programmes. Several designs are also fairtrade.
The 3D tufting means the high and low pile are cut at different heights. That is what gives the shapes their definition, rather than a pattern printed onto a flat surface.
Wool is worth understanding before you buy. It is hard-wearing and holds its shape, which is why these rugs last, but it is not a throw-in-the-machine material. Check the care guidance that comes with your rug and get in touch if you are unsure.
Choosing one for the room
Buy the rug before the cushions and blankets. It is the largest block of colour and pattern in most children's rooms, and everything softer is easier and cheaper to match to it afterwards.
If the room is small, a shaped rug reads as a deliberate object and takes up less visual space than a rectangle covering most of the floor. If the room is large or shared, a rectangle does more useful work by marking out where play happens.
